	People have speculated about artificially creating intelligent
beings as far back as there is literary evidence.  In early times, the
artificial intelligences were like humans or animals and the proposed
way of making them was by magic.  Once the machine age started, the
speculation began to take a mechanical turn.  Mechanical animals operated
by clockwork will built that went through very complicated sequences of
motions, and it was imagined that elaborating these ideas might really
lead to intelligent machines.
